Ali Brown, a native of Fairfield County, Conn., cut her teeth in marketing in her early 20s, starting as an account assistant at Mosby Consumer Health in Boston and working her way up to head the new publishing division at The Benjamin Group advertising agency in New York.Desiring creative freedom and financial independence, Ali became a freelance marketing communications writer in 1999. Starting with only a dial-up Internet connection, a personal computer, and her basic writing skills, Ali built a thriving practice, eventually attracting prestigious clients such as New York Times Digital, Adweek Magazine,Scholastic Books, and Dun & Bradstreet.In 2001, she started publishing her first email newsletter, or “ezine,” to help market her business.
