Alyson J. McGregor, MD MA FACEP is a women’s health pioneer who has brought the concept of sex and gender differences in the delivery of acute medical care to the national stage. She is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, the Co-Founder and Director for the Division of Sex and Gender in Emergency Medicine (SGEM) at Brown University’s Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. McGregor also serves as the Director for the SGEM Fellowship, Chair of the SGEM Community Advisory Board, Course Director for Women’s Health at the Alpert Medical School Emergency Medicine Residency and past President of the Rhode Island Medical Women’s Association.Nationally, Dr. McGregor is a Co-Founder and Board Member for Sex and Gender Women’s Health Collaborative, a national organization designed to foster sex- and gender- specific medicine into medical education, training and clinical practice. Dr. McGregor served on the summit planning committee for the Sex and Gender Based Medical Education Summit, the first summit designed to bring together curriculum leaders of all medical schools nationally to advance how future physicians are educated.Dr. McGregor serves as an external advisor for Sex and Gender Educational Products for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health. Dr. McGregor has also served on the Executive Committee for the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine’s Consensus Conference on Gender-Specific Research in Emergency Care and currently Chairs the SGEM National Interest Group.Dr. McGregor’s research focus is on the effects that sex and gender have on emergent conditions and has been an international activist with such talks as “Why Medicine Often Has Dangerous Side Effects For Women” on TED.com. Dr. McGregor is the lead editor for the textbook Sex and Gender in Acute Care Medicine, Cambridge University Press, and serves as Topic Editor for Women’s Health and Gender Medicine for the Journal Clinical Therapeutics.Dr. McGregor has won numerous awards, including the University Emergency Medicine Foundation’s Outstanding Physician Award, Outstanding Didactic Presentation Award, Academic Achievement Award and the Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine’s Momentum Award.
