As lieutenants in the Navy, Tyler Benson and his cofounder (Benjamin Mantica, who’s over 30) found that the best place to unwind from the stress of deployment was in a warship’s galley, where food for the crew was cooked and consumed. The experience would serve as the seed of an idea for a food hall-centric restaurant group and incubator. The Smallman Galley in Pittsburgh was the group’s first, but Galley Group has quickly expanded to other locations in the Rust Belt, including Ohio City and Detroit. Benson aims to have 13 “Galleys” by year-end 2021. The incubator-meets-food hall aspect of the Galley model allows budding restaurant concepts to show off their cooking to consumers without immediately taking on the full financial and real estate risk that comes with opening a restaurant.Contact a speaker booking agent to check availability on Tyler Benson and other top speakers and celebrities.
